James started his career at the Development Bank of Southern Africa as an economist/project leader in 1986. After nearly four years with the bank and having completed his BComm (Hons) at the University of the Witwatersrand, he enrolled to study an MSc in agricultural economics in the United States.

On completion of his Masters degree, James returned to South Africa and joined the Kwa-Zulu Finance and Investment Corporation as an economist/project leader before joining Halls in 1994 as Marketing Manager.

At the beginning of 1997 James took over the position of property manager, followed by his directorship and appointment as managing
director of Halls Properties in 2008.

He is responsible for managing the Group's real estate
development activities, leasing portfolio, and provision of services
on the estate.
