Hugh immigrated to South Africa from Northern Ireland in 1977. He joined the Department of Forestry in Nelspruit as a District Forest Officer and after completing his contract joined Halls in 1982.

He was appointed to the Board of H L Hall and Sons Ltd in 1992 as the director responsible for the company's timber interests. In 2002 he moved to the Farms division and he is currently the director responsible for Farms within the Fresh Produce cluster.
