Rob obtained BSc Engineering degree at Wits University in 1973. He continued his post-graduate studies at the University of Bristol and earned his PhD in 1979. Later that year he joined General Electric Corporate R&D (GE) in New York and was involved in research and development.

He moved with GE to Pennsylvania in 1986 to take up the position of Manager, International Marketing at GE Environmental Services Inc.

In 1988 he returned to South Africa and joined H L Hall and Sons Ltd, initially as Managing Director Designate for six months, after which
he was promoted to Managing Director.
