about >> citizenship
YOU'RE going to struggle to find any significant commercial enterprise today that still says the business of business is business. But how many are really performing when it comes to citizenship, and how many are just lip-synching on the stage?
Even though most successful businesses publicly acknowledge that they have a responsibility to more than just shareholders returns, actively living out that broader commitment to people and planet is a lot harder than simply writing down a mission statement or handing over a cheque to a deserving cause.
So how does Halls give form to this much-used and abused ideal of being a good corporate citizen, when there are just so many deserving causes on our own doorstep?
Sometimes in small, stuttering steps. Frequently with a first focus on the wellbeing of our own people - our employees. Often by drawing on the example of our founders, who understood what it was to be a responsible corporate citizen long before the label became fashionable. And almost always without a drumroll or fanfare.
Business growth, economic development, job creation, performance
management? Or should it be environmental stewardship,
business ethics, respect for individuals and communities?
At Halls, we don't believe we have to choose. We believe
healthy respect for the local community and our natural
environment will enhance our business growth, not get
in the way of it.
